Building a crystal radio or a simple electric motor as a child has many a time turned out to be the defining moment for many in deciding their career as an engineer.  As for me, it was the LED that helped start my journey into the world of electronics.  Trying to make the magical device blinks, brighter, dimmer and a host of other experiments has played a big part in my choice of career many years later.

As a father and an electronic enthusiast, I hope the young ones still find joy in building simple yet amazing circuits today, amidst the distraction of computer games and social networking.
