    Engineering Vibrations - Fundamentals and Applications in Hard Disk Drives (DT322)

    SynopsisThis is a course of continuing education for working engineers in technical fields related to mechanical vibrations. It covers the fundamentals of engineering vibrations and then bridges to practical issues and solutions encountered in hard disk drive industry.

    This course is intended for practicing engineers, reliability engineers and designers, and engineering managers concerned with practical aspects of dynamics and vibrations in engineering applications. The course will provide guidance and considerations relevant to the analysis and design of mechanical systems, complemented with the use of computer software tool with case studies on hard disk drive servo and mechanical designs. It also offers many examples of practical design solutions for different industrial problems.

    This course places particular emphasis on building up strong analytical, numerical, and experimental technical skills on engineering vibrations. Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to appraise and address a wide range of vibration problems with a good insight.

    The course instructor will draw on his extensive experience to illustrate the subject matter with practical examples from hard disk drive and turbomachinery industries.

    • Introduction to FEM software for vibrations - ANSYS
    • Special topics applied in HDD
    1. Vibrations of stationary disk vibrations
    2. Vibrations of rotating disks
    3. Vibrations of disk-spindle system
    4. Rotary actuator system dynamics
    5. Dynamics of fluid dynamic bearings
    6. Shock and vibration testing

    Day 3
    • Introduction to Hard Disk Drive Mechatronics
    1. Data format and position error signals (PES)
    2. Dynamic designs in mechanical systems
    3. Overall view of actuator servo controller design
    • Practical vibration analysis with FEM software - ANSYS
    • Servo-Mechanical design and budget with Track Misregistration (TMR)
    • Acoustics and nonlinear vibrations
